CHAPTER SEVEN

House Roseblood was one of the larger estates on the west coast, hedged by dense boreal forest on one side and ocean on the other. It was nearly evening by time he landed and managed to hire another bike. The air was chillier than Cedarhaven, and he felt goosebumps prickle his skin as he cruised down the winding, empty country roads. Large aspens were in full bloom, and glinted metallically in the dimming light.

On the plane ride, he had tried to think of what he would say, but he still had no real plan of attack other than showing up on the door step and demanding an answer. He knew it was a dangerous move—technically he was outside the jurisdiction of his own Clan. On the other hand, if the Roseblood Clan had used Krista to steal secrets, it would be an act of war, and he would be well within his rights.

Fuck, he thought with exasperation, and tried to focus on driving.

By time he reached the estate, there was a Pacific storm creeping off the ocean, and the first few drops of rain had begun to scatter on his leather jacket. The gate opened automatically as he maneuvered the bike up to the main entrance. Expecting me, he realized. Sure enough a tall gaunt butler was waiting for him as he went up the steps.

“The Maven will see you, young Master,” the butler said sharply, his large blunt nose lifting in a derisive manner, “although she prefers to have her guests call ahead.”

“She can make an exception,” Kyle snorted, and followed the butler inside as he was lead through passages and finally entered a large dining room.

The Maven of House Roseblood was a quintessential noble. She was tall and lithe, almost a foot taller than he was. There were rumors of her true form, one of the rarest, though only a few had ever actually seen it—a white tiger. She had on a long pale cloak and slurped at a bowl of soup in front of her. She took her time acknowledging the young lion, and dabbed at the edges of her mouth.

“And what brings such a young and regal man to our House tonight, of all nights?” she said, without looking at him. There was a long white stripe in her hair that ran the full length of a tight braid, the same sort of design and pattern as Krista’s.

“You know why,” he said. “Krista.”

A wry grin fused to her lips as she offered him to sit. She looked older in the candlelight. Despite the fact she could easily have passed as Krista’s mother, Kyle knew she was much older—in fact, she was Krista’s grandmother, though the semblance of her age was like a ghostly veil on the woman’s cheeks.

“Did you send her to steal from me?” he said flatly, and the butler cleared his throat.

“Steal?” the Maven asked dangerously. “Whatever would I want to steal from you?”

He flinched. He had to be careful—instinct told him she knew all about the computer-watch prototype.
